My alarm went off at 5:25 a.m. I did not want to get up, but I figured that with coffee I could survive; I knew I would have to beat the rush downstairs because the TFA’ers are all type A overachievers and would be in line for breakfast early. I was right, but wrong about just how early I would have to be. I was not early enough for coffee! Turns out that Type A’s like to drink coffee. Who knew? I managed to stay awake through all of the morning sessions even though it was a little bit of the struggle. The diet coke in my lunch fixed my caffeine deprivation and propelled me to the 4:00 p.m. return to Moody Towers. I was exhausted but TFA has perfected how to wear you all the way down and then prop you back up. After dinner we went to opening ceremonies. Each region did their group chants (Houston’s was for sure the funkiest.) Then, Wendy Kopp spoke. Needless to say we were all pumped back up. I was even pumped up enough to climb the stairs to the 14th floor due to an elevator outage! Hopefully the first day adrenaline and extra motivation from Wendy can get me up early enough for coffee tomorrow…

A simple tip from yours truly, who’ve been there and failed miserably at staying awake during ANY session, morning or afternoon: stand up.
Yes, only a nerd has the nerve to stand through the whole session while everyone else is sitting down. But I call it part of my “special needs” in order to study/work effectively, and that becomes my sacred ground. Any teacher should and could appreciate simple individual behavior modifications like that.
